JESSE

“What the fuck just happened?”

Charlie’s voice cut through the silence that had engulfed the house. I didn’t answer him straight away. I wasn’t sure how to answer him. Michael had taken Hope back to Heaven. It had been obvious that was his plan from the moment he had appeared. None of us would have been able to stop him even if we had wanted to. I just prayed that he hadn’t hurt her. I would never forgive myself if he did. I should have been quicker. I should have just taken Hope the first night I had met her. Instead, I pandered to her needs. Humanity would always be a weakness to an Angel that showed it.

“Jesse! What the fuck happened? Where is Hope? What has he done to her?” Charlie fired.

I took a shaky breath as I turned my attention to the human at my side. Charlie was back on his feet, eyes flashing with a mixture of fear and anger. Remembering what Michael had just done to him, I reached out my hand. I wanted to check that Michael had healed him. I hoped my leader would keep his word and keep Charlie alive, for now.

“Don’t touch me, you feathered freak,” he snapped, pulling away from me violently.

“Charlie, please, I want to be sure that Michael has left no lasting damage on you.”

He hesitated for a moment, eyeing me warily before nodding in agreement. I let my hands wander over his body gently, barely making contact. A soft, orange glow covered Charlie as I checked him, my magic healing any final wounds.

“He said he wouldn’t hurt me. Do you think he would lie?”

I shook my head, letting out a long breath. Things were a mess, and I didn’t even want to imagine what the consequences of my actions would be.

“He won’t hurt you, Charlie. Not while he needs to keep Hope happy.”

“But once he is done with her, he will kill me?”

I shrugged in response. Likely he would kill Charlie, but I didn’t want to admit that to him. The guy was already terrified with everything as it was.

“You need to go after her, Jesse. He’s a monster. You can’t leave her alone in Heaven with an evil Archangel as her ward.”

I held back a retort. Reminding myself that Charlie was human, and their concept of Heaven was so very different to the reality I lived. If only they knew that the place that I called home wasn’t too dissimilar to the Earth they lived on.

“I wish it was that easy, Charlie. When I re-enter my home, first I will have to track Hope down. If Michael wants to keep her hidden, he will be sure it’s from everyone. Besides, I am in enough trouble as it is. He won’t trust her to me. Not after I failed to return her.

“But he didn’t give you much of a chance. He couldn’t expect Hope to just go with you without you gaining her trust.”

“I should have taken her the night I met her,” I admitted.
